First steps

Post by WeekendFreaks »

Hey guys, i've been trying to learn how to produce some music but i found out that the start line is veeeery difuse, i have lots of question about what should i do first, so without much introduction, here i go:
(just to clear things a little bit, i just don't know how to produce but don't worry, i do know a bunch of things about electronic music)
I want to learn how to make hardstyle music but it's on another level for a start, so i want to start with some random electro, preferably progressive house and here is when the confusion begins. I downloaded FL studio because it's a simple interface, friendly to start and very powerfull, so when i start to watch some tutorials and it makes a mess on my head. Question?
1. obviously, where should i begin?
2. Should i learn to mix before producing?
3. Is it FL studio the program i'm looking for?
4. On one tutorial says that i first have to learn the scales and how to combine chords and all that stuff, should I?
5. Where did you begin, how did you learn?
6. is there any good page or course?
7. Programs i should have?

i apologize is this is to newbie but i prefer to look like an idiot before sit and wait for nothing, take in count that i speak spanish so first thats the reason of why it might be mistakes in the writing and second take it in count for the courses or tutorials if you recommend me some, i speak english well anyway, in case there isn't any in spanish

1. begin by watching basic fl tuts
2 no, learn to mix after you learn sythesis and structuring
3 thats up to you
4 yes, learning scales is the most imporant, keeps your songs in key
5 i started by messing around with fl then learning the basics slowly progressing towards making hardstyle!
6 i dunno, warbeats on youtube is useful
7 i'd say massive and sylenth for a starter!

any questions feel free to ask

4. Learn what a scale is. Learn not to mix shit up. You don't need to memorize every single note in a scale (or memorize the 'formula' of said scales, like how to count the notes in major, minor etc) though.

The first thing u wanna do is learn FL Studio so that u know the most basic things (youtube tutorials). I actually prefer starting of with a easier genre like normal dance music. Hardstyle can be pretty hard to produce if u just learned fl.
And be patient because it will take some time to learn producing. Don't focus so much on the sound design in the beginning, that is something that comes with the time.

But the most important thing is that u have fun when producing! Don't think that u will become an big artist and only make awesome songs because thats not an good idea. Fun = good stuff

I wish u good luck with your producing ;)

aaaaaaaaand you're already going the wrong way with number 1

the very number one thing is that you fairly get an idea about producing itself. Start messing around with it, get familiar with the program and explore everything that feels reachable. If you have ideas, start working them out no matter if it sounds good or bad, or not at all like what you had in your head. Practice makes perfect, using FL gives experience. Also, rome wasn't build in a day, don't worry about your level when you've just started

Actually, what deadmau5 did was pretty normal. It seems like he was failing, but beginning hardstyle producers aren't really much different. DM5 pretty much failed more because of his tremendous attitude since he's famous and bashful and it backfired. On a sidenote why he looks so much better, he has experience with producing, but not hardstyle so...

all right thank you very much, i've already started to mess around with fl but it's just that everytime i try to make anything it result that whatever you were trying to do is much more deep than it looks like:
Want to use a preset? it has infinite combinations of configurations, want to use the mixer, i don't know even where to start jajaja, wanto to use the piano roll, i have no fucking idea how to combine the notes and also i still don't get all the meanings of the producer world, it's going to take a while, i know, but i'm very excited about it it's just that i'm overloaded with all that information suddenly at the same time jajaja

agree, most people respond with a cold comment saying "grab this", "watch that" but they can't look through the eyes of a beginner. You can't be dedicated to producing without first being introduced to it

check out this info i've written in another topic, it might help you on your way:
tutorials-f22/from-the-very-basics-t26151.html?hilit=%20mixer

btw, I started producing in 2004/2005, and learned by trial and error. No tutorial stuff, schooling etc. just having extreme passion and stamina to continue. The only times I watch tutorials are when I want to know exactly what effect I want to create.
