The producer's cycle - struggle.

Post by Nitrax »

The producer's monthly cycle, at least for me. Sounds weird. But I really want to know how other people feel about this since this is something that keeps coming back to me. It's obviously not always as I describe it below, but it should still give you an idea of what's going on.

Week 1: Excited to produce, full of ideas, and manage to start about 2 or 3 projects that sound promising in two or three days. Next few days are spent working more on those projects.
Week 2: One of those projects is working out and another is almost finished, you're happy with the progress, although not nearly as productive as the week before.
Week 3: The projects are starting to sound like shit, and it feels like the work you did a year ago sounds just as good. Out of desperation, continue to work on projects you started before (this sometimes works out, though).
Week 4: No productivity because of demotivation and loss of creativity, while hating everything and anything. Start thinking about becoming a trash collector.
Then back to week 1, usually. Sometimes week 4 lasts longer.

This is basically my producer's life ever since I started (january 2012), and I HATE those periods where absolutely nothing works out. This can't be just me that feels like at times you are just NOT improving at all. In case it's not clear, I'm currently in "week 4".

So, anybody feel similar to this? The learning process needs to speed up, but I have no clue how...

Maybe a good indication of where I currently am to end this post: I feel like I'm stuck at a point where the productions are good, but not good enough for release. Mostly because of the mix not being up to par, ever. But the thing is, the cleaner I try to produce, the duller and emptier the tracks get.

I feel exactly like this, but i believe its because you listen to the same track over and over again, it becomes very repetitive and you will magically find wrongs in the track (atleast for me). I then try to fix that and i pretty much ruin the track and loose motivation. What i can do sometimes is to send my newly started tracks to friends and hear what they think. When i make some changes i can ask them again and see how they like that and vice versa. Seeing things from a different perspective is very important, imo.

It used to be that, but now it's just the annoyance of not progressing in skill.

Oh the amount of trash hardstyle snippets I've sent to my friends... :+
Just can't do that anymore, only when I really know a track is great. I do use this forum, but still, can't magically learn a lot more suddenly.

there is no rush in producing. If you are at "week 4" you simple have to take a break from what you've been working on, I felt like that before with something and I started working on that project again 9 months later.

I feel you. I'm also at the "week 4". I feel like I want to do something but when I try to, I have no imagination at all and I just think "maybe later it'll work" and leave it there. Usually I just force myself to do something and so I go back to week 1 when the production rolls again.

Spoiler
agree, working on some (really, just SOME) tunes here for about a year aswell, YES it is long... but the result will be worth it, and i've learned alot during those periods.
