Obsessed by producing

Post by Dj Reaper »

Some time ago I thought I needed a break from producing, but after 2 days I couldnt wait anymore.
I slowly started realizing that my life is being dominated by music production.

Always when I am at home I just produce when I have no obbligations to do. When I am out of home I think about melodies and stuff and when I listen to music I always analize it, try to take inspirations from it or listen to my own stuff and pick out what doesnt work.

My productions get more and more in some kind of manner, I think too much about the structure and get lost in sound design. I actually need a break but I cant make one, I take producing to serious like it was a job or something and no more a hobby.

It even came to that point when I went on vacation I thought, "no, what will I do, I cant produce for 2 weeks, all the ideas I will have will be lost after this" and always when I sat in a room or somewhere I thought about music and so and always when I go somewhere I think are there maybe people I could talk about music or production with, I always google gear, production tutorials and that stuff...in short: I am addicted!

Do you think I should seriously take a longer break of it? And if yes, what can I do in that break when not producing? Wont I forget everything I learnt? What can I do to be consequent and to really think about other things and when am I ready to return to producing again? My expectations grow to quickly, other than my skills, and at times I produce somthing I am really happy with but after that I relisten to my old stuff and think about how nice the chord progressions, the feelings and that stuff were and I think it is my lifestyle that ruins this creativity.

EDIT: And when I dont produce I feel so pointless. I seem to have no interests except for producing, only thing which distacts me is when I am with friends and do something nice but as I am alone I realize that I can just make music and nothing else.

So you think I should simply be happy about this passion and keep producing (fanatically) as I do? Well, when I think, most people who are good in something are also very fanatic about it... but what worries me is that this way I block all other possible interests I could get into things and that producing becomes the only thing I like/ am able to do.

I'd love to have that 'fanatic' passion tbh man. Keep going

@Dj Reaper: I got the same as you got, can't live without music around me.. A few months ago Audiofreq (if I'm correct) posted something on a forum why and when he takes his brakes. He has to give himself rest for new inspiration. :)

I need to find the link to this thread :fist: I cant immagine how someone who makes music professionally can say I make a break. Doesnt a lable give deadlines? Tough I often dream of making a living of producing, thats one of those things which tell me no, because I am a person who easily gets stressed and perhaps as a musician I couldnt handle that stress of making tracks like a machine when they are needed, especially hardstyle, when I have one of those phases when no kick comes out.
Would be really cool to read how he handles this things, when, why and how he makes breaks.

But I think I am not ready for a break, you all say it is a good thing to be so hypermotivated and I think I should use this and if I am not born for music sooner or later I will feel that, and the invested time was no waste for sure as when I finish a track I really like is one of the best feelings I know. :)

1 tip: If it's your passion, don't be scared away by stress/'im not able to handle track deadlines'. You can just try. If you fail, nothing is lost i guess.

Imagine building a guitar and then tuning it and then playing it. That's what electronic music is.
