Question about Kick pitching

Post by Dj Reaper »

Hi,
I am wondering if it is an intelligent idea to make the kick on the lowest pitch which will be played in the track and than always pitch it up and strech it for other pitches.
I used to make my kicks on the root note and often when I went down with pitch they lost power and crunch (btw I work with Fls Sampler in monophonic mode) and so this thought came and I wanted to hear your opinion about this. :)

Spoiler
I'm just saving ljk32 the effort of repeating himself. :p
Additionally, in regards the note you make the kick on, I'm not 100% sure about that. People always suggest G, or F, and that seems to work. Logic would dictate making the kick at a rough halfway point in the track, as in, if you know how the kick is going to pitch up or down in the track, make it in between that point. However, there's probably a reasoning behind the G, or F note, though ultimately, it's up to you. However, I personally would do the rough in between thing, rather than the lowest note for two reasons:
1) Because I'm not used to hearing a really low kick for an intro, since it isn't done often (Alphaverb does it in Overdrive Ya Woofah), I wouldn't be familiar with constructing it at such a low note, in the sense that I wouldn't recognise when it's on the right track or not as much as I would with a kick on a higher note.
2) I don't think the pitching will be the same if the original kick is a really low note, compared to the pitching of a kick made at an average level - G or F.

Anyway, that's just my take on it.

Also, the kicks pitch awesomely in Overdrive Ya Woofah, so that links back to the - "If the kick is bad, the pitching will generally be bad." In this case the kick sounds good, and that is most probably why the pitching did too. That track has a really nicely made very low kick, and it still pitches well, so you definitely can try it out, it depends on what you're aiming for. The pitching from a kick that low will sound different to the pitching of a kick whose root note is much higher.

Actually, you take the original kick, Put it in whatever DAW you want. Cut off the punch and paste it as a seperate layer. Then you take the tail. Scale it a bit so it's quite big on your screen. Now this is very important. You take out your boner and slap it to your screen as many times as you can. Keep playing the kick tho, If you hear the tail go slightly higher you're in the right position. Slap it some more for the perfect pitch.
When you've done this you got the ultimate pitch :+

I always make my kicks at G. If made well, the kick pitches down half an octave easily without losing power or crunch.

When playing bassline of a melody, I just create a kick at G and afterwards I pitch the tail to the bassline notes. Never out of tune and always good sounding at the lowest notes of a melody.

I'm no pro, but the pitching is this example is good, I reckon.

Thanks for helping, I will make my next kick in G and see if it works better, and if that doesn´t work the problem may lay within the kick! :)

And no need for trolling, I watched a few pitching tutorials but in none I have heard about that hint so I though I would ask for something like that here.

Actually, On topic. If you use FL. the best way to pitch is. Piano roll > Glide > put a small note on the pitch right after the punch > Bounce > Stretch with Cool Edit Pro.
Best way to pitch
