I have a perfect kick in mind but fear to forget it

Post by Dj Reaper »

Right now a perfect Hardcore-Melody came to my mind and an even better kick which would perfectly fit with the whole arrangement, but always when that happens and I start working during the kick making process I forget about my detailed ideas and don´t remember the exact sound of the kick I want. Now I fear to listen to anything or think about anything else than the track I have in mind and it would be nice if someone could give me an advice how to remember exactely what I want and be able to say when making it "if I go on this way something different will come out, I want exactly that sound in my mind and I want to work until I get it".

I hope you understand my problem and can tell me how you handle such problems. I have a track in mind which I think has quite a similar kick but I am not sure and don´t want to listen to it as if it is different I forget about the kick I have in mind.

Maybe write down some notices about the kick?

I think it is very different to have a kick in your mind and reproduce it 100%.
In my case I start and distort a bit and see where the kick develops.

If it only be possible to record your thoughts, eh.. When it comes to sounds guess best option is to just write it down on piece of paper like Hypnos wrote. hope you get the sound right tho i suggest you forget about it and move on experimenting cuz that's pretty much how all the best kicks were made

The only thing that really works for me, because I have the exact same problem when a genius melody comes into mind and I forget it once I place the first note, is to record yourself humming the melody. Doesn't have to be perfect but you'll remember it, and when you listen to it you can tell if it's really that good or if it's okay. For kick, kinda hard to say. I make my kicks by experimenting, as I am a complete retard when it comes to translating kick ideas into sound.

I don't produce but I'd like too and I do exactly this. If somethings pops into my head I try & record it straight away. Atleast you can refer back to it later on :)

Well I can't really imagine how can you imagine a perfect kick sound, but try building it slowly until it sounds like you want. ;)
Seems simple like that but it will be hard, because when I try to do this, everything just fucks up. :(

This. And its so much easy now then say 10-20 years ago, cos every mobile phone now has a record function, so when inspiration strikes, get your phone out and record it quickly before you forget! Then you can tell if its awesome or not!

I always get inspired on the way up to school or from school while im in the buss, it would be awkward to record yourself humming beside many people :D haha
Cuz mostly i get inspired outside the house

Thanks for your help. I listened to the track I suspected having a similar kick and in fact it was more or less the same which was in my mind. I tried to reake it but of course I failed, but I know if I need a kick like that one to which song I should refer, and the melody is still in my head (I think, I am not sure if it is the exactely the same as yesterday, but who cares :) )

When I get inspired with melodies if I am at home (often I get inspired under the shower :+ ) I run to my synth and try to replay it and than just record it with my phone out of the speakers or play the MIDI notes by hand in FL Studio and when I have time I open the project, analize them and put them in by Mouseclicks and make a sound and so on.
If I am on the road if possible I just keep it in mind until I get home (and usually have already an arrangement in my head than) and if I am somewhere where I need to be concentrated in other things usually inspiartion doesn´t hit me and if so...well, bad luck.

Haha, when we´re taliking about putting down inspirations, I remember one evening I needed to go to bed and while trying to fall asleep inspiration hit so badass and I wrote down, while laying in bed the whole arrangement on my mobil´s notice block with letters like
"2 times bwa-bwa"
"tututut-bass"
"melody: d...d...e.e.d..."
"with kick grom grom"
"breakdown strings, open filter"
"clock, zclock, zclock"
:+ :+ :+
