Something boring in my tracks

Post by Deadquality »

Hello everybody,
I just finished my new track's break and climax and when I'm listening to the result I feel something boring in it and I don't know what's missing. I don't think the melody and the lead are bad. I tried a lot of different mixdowns but my track always sounds smothered and not clear. If I cut the low frequencies of my lead the tracks becomes really empty.
So here is the preview of my track and I hope you can help me to find what's wrong. Thanks !

PS : Do not pay attention on the vocals at the start, it was just a test. :p

EDIT :

this is the actual state of the thing :

I think it sounds pretty good. :) I agree, the mixing is poor and there is a lot of unnecessary noise going on, but I think that can be solved by using other leads and properly eq'ing your kicks. I also think you could add some more power to your kick, not by extra dist but more eq'ing like i said.

Ugh damn I want those vocals! :D are there more phrases? :D

you need something so spice up things a bit for example a kick at 0:40 with a rising cutoff similar to 0:28 and after that add a second synth like you did in the 2nd climax that goes with the melody, add the vocal again and build up with snares from 0:40 on, not with claps. sounds better imo ;)

for the mixing: try to expand your leads on the stereofield (maybe you've already done that, can't properly hear it cause of crappy headphones) and try to add a multiband compressor on the kick and turn it a little bit mono and boost the kicks volume a little bit.

EQ the kick (cut some highs add low mids to get more crunch and less noise), EQ the lead (a bit of crips in the highs and less low freqs) well..... try out things a bit ;) somewhere you'll get to that point at which it sounds good.

Ok, Thanks for your answers I'll work more and follow your tips and post it again below ↓ :)
I realize that this topic was not indispensable because it's always like EQing and compressing but I really wanted some opinions on my track ;)

@PhadeZ : For the vocals, yes there are a lot of other phrases :D It can be what you want with this web site :

Just choose "English (US) - Will BadGuy" in the list !

How do you download the vocals from that site?

With Audacity,
Just choose the "Stereo Mix" as the microphone and play the vocals.
If you don't have the "Stereo Mix" in Audacity go to your computer's audio settings and enable it. :)

Ok, I tried to apply your tips on my mix down (EQ the kick and lead, changed the lead, ...) and now it's not perfect but it sounds clear. Thanks :D

Now last but not least, the intro and outro :'( the intros are the part of a track where I have the most difficulties. I don't know how to make them.

Listen to similar tracks and count bars. Breaks are important for mixing your track. Almost all intros & outros in (mainstream) hardstyle are 32+32+32 with a 4beat break at the end of each 32beat group... then instrumental section or some claps or whatever... just listen to other tracks for the timing and fill in the rest...

EDIT:
Sorry about that then. I usually just drop samples from my library(of sounds that I've created mostly by accident) and stretch/pitch/add Fx to those samples. I'm sure as a hardstyle producer you have collected some distorted/industrial/etc.. sounds. Simply playing around is the thing for me atleast. Knowing the structure and timing makes the playing around a lot less random and helps get results sooner. Listening to other records can still help.

E: And I just realized I said bars when I meant beats. So its 8+8+8bars with 1bar break... :O

Thanks for the advice :) but I don't mean the structure, I mean that I have no idea how to make all these small FXs that we can hear in pro tracks and the art of introducing the melody before the intro. I know there are tutorials but it never fits with my intro and I almost always make tracks without intro.
