Imagine building a guitar and then tuning it and then playing it. That's what electronic music is.

How is your name orange when you don't know what sound design is? lol
JK,
But yeah as Zapp said, the way your make your sounds, the quality of sounds themselves.
With a lot of people, the idea's in the track are good but just lack the quality sounds (kicks or leads or anything basically)

music imo consists like any other creative field of 3 steps:
pre-production (the idea, the sketches, the plan,..),
production (sounddesign, composing, arrangement,...)
and post-production (mastering, marketing, sales,...)
sounddesign is, especially in hardstyle, next to arrangement and composing on of the main disciplines.
sounddesign starts with "what hihats you like" and ends with the way you route your fm-matrix.
for instance: a horror-shooter will have another sounddesign than a transformers movie or a house track.
basically sounddesign is the process of creating a certain atmosphere or sound by programming patches and manipulating the sounds you get/have/record.
a old hardstyle track has a completely different sounddesign than a new one, the synthesizers are different, the drums, the basses - the entire atmosphere differs from what you know as hardstyle right now.
in nowadays hardstyle with sounddesign people often "just" mean how the things like kick, leads, screetches etc are made - so ACTUALLY "sound programming". (old way to describe it though haha)
GENERALLY speaking sounddesign is everything that is not the music itself or vocals.
and it's more than just a field in music: sounddesigners are everywhere!
they create gunshots for your games, the right engine sound for the latest car flick or they work as soundscaping artists in fancy new york galleries.
AND they programm the patches for the synths you own!
it's a really vast creative field in audio engineering.
shame hardstyle often just reduces it to the "programming".
i love sounddesign :3 especially programming synths and sound scaping/creating atmospheres.
