If you know your speakers off by heart then you don't really need monitors to be honest. Porter Robinson uses regular Logitech speakers and he's producing epic EDM tunes :)

Use some good headphones/earphones. I use my iPod earphones :)

Imagine building a guitar and then tuning it and then playing it. That's what electronic music is.

Well, all you need is the holy trinity :)
A pair of "cheap" speakers with a light sub, some decent monitors for referencing and good headphones.
Use all three of them in the right mixture and when it's kicking yer ass on all three of them you're done :)

I love the comeback/argument, "well this awesome producer uses crappy speakers!"

Audiofreq was saying in his livestream too, good monitors AND equally important (if not more) acoustic treatment in your room really is essential if you want to produce great music

Also, this is pretty helpful

I wasn't trying to make a comeback or an argument, MKN. I was just stating the fact that Porter Robinson doesn't use monitors or acoustic treatment? lol.

Monitors are pretty much essential for producing, and especially the mixdown process. You will need a pair eventually if you are actually planning on taking producing seriously. Acoustic treatment helps a lot, but it's not really essential in a home studio/bedroom, as the room dimensions are probably crap anyway.

Want a comparison? Mixdown a track through some cheap speakers and then do the same with monitors, then listen to both tracks through various sound systems and tell me which one sounds better ;).

Also in relation to your original question, surely you should know if you are putting too much/too little? Depends on what you are adding reverb too, but i'd probably go with the others saying around 20%, so you don't over do it.

@ andyh"something something :P"
I really think you'd better trust your own soundsystem even if it's not monitors then some1 else opinion on how much reverb you should use. All becouse it's a matter of taste & diffrent sounds need different amounts of reverb.

As for you other kids who are all psyced up becouse you got a pair of monitors for your birthday you doesn't "neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed" monitors, it helps alot(no argument there) but it's quite possible to produce a quality track without monitors.

bottom line, if you're serious about producing and can afford monitors, BUY!!
if you don't have the cash, don't worry about it, studio time and a whole lot of fun is more important then monitors :)
