the 10 seconds of mixing is great, but never adds energy. Maybe this is subtle, but it seems to me to just be bringing in the next track as quickly as possible, rather than that combination of two overlapping kicks which just sounds thunderous.
Does anyone still perform the overlapping mixing between tracks that long term followers are used to?
I don't know man. I listen to EHS sets, and even like older tracks from post 2009 are mixed this way at parties.

But it had me thinking: if dj's are mostly waving (basically taking the role of a conductor at a concert), then what is the role of an MC? especially as we see much more sets online.

It's not like there were no livestreams before this virus, and the MCs basically say 1 word or are just drinking beer or something.
Vocals seems to get people in the correct head space more so than waving arms. Auditory Stimulation. And vocals are generally more powerful with this than sounds which is one reason why people like vocals in songs more so than just instrumental songs. And so that's the role of the MC. Now this isn't the case for everyone, but when you got someone on stage saying something about the music, you as a human is generally more inclined to start thinking that as well. Again, this of course doesn't work on everyone, and tbh if you already have the idea that an MC is annoying, then you most likely won't be affect by the MC except for just finding them even more annoying.

Also at the part about if there's any sets that still overlap songs: I wish there was more of that, that's why the mixes I make I try to do that as much as possible. Personally, I listen to a mix to see what the performer did with the music. If I want to listen to the songs for what they are, i'd just listen to the songs. This is also why probably my favorite mix I've heard in the past few year's is The Qreator's at Qlimax this past year, because he actually did something interesting.

There should be more Hardstyle and Dubstep/Drum and Bass crossovers.

This is not unpopular, this is simply the truth.

Michael Jo is by fucking far the worst vocalist this genre has ever seen, he cant sing for shit, has the cheesiest, most annoying voice imaginable and him featuring basically auto-ruins a track, no matter how good it might be beside the vocals.

3 of the 4 songs that he's featured on are some of my favorites. Starting with "Wildstylez ft. Michael Jo - Colours of the Night", I really liked his voice in it. I'll agree that it is cheesy, but imo it sets up an atmosphere that sounds a bit more peaceful which I really like those types of tracks here and there. But I can see how this wouldn't be liked by others.

I feel that today's Hardstyle is too much on the none-sense statement during it's chorus that tries to sound cool but are more crinchy (IMO). It is almost refreshing when a tune don't have a 45sec long statement before the main melody kicks in (even if 90% of all tunes uses the same Sawtooth in their melody which also a bit of crinch).

I get taken by complete suprise when I don't hear that Sawtooth in the main melody and suddenly starts to think there is a thought behind the production of the tune.

On another note; watching Qonnect since Corona started have made me laugh many times on how little Hardstyle DJ's have to do between songs.

#1: Sing the none-sense statement to yourself during the chorus
#2: Wave hands for the main melody
#3: Put your fingers on the EQ nobs and look like you doing something during the build up
#4: Jump when the climax enter
#5: Repeat
#6: Profit

That is lot of unpopular opinions, but I had to remove it from my chest. (L)
