Re: metal

Post by lilfrenchidiot »

Sup guys, just watched this video to educate myself as I don't know shit about metal :

And I found myself to especially like Black, Doom and Avant-Garde Metal (among a few others). Would you have any recommandations for a newcomer ?

Listening to Candlemass - The Door To Doom at the moment :)

As a black and Doom listener I can give you an help. I can suggest you Mgla as Black Matal band their last album is one of the best releases of the year imo. Here you have a lot of great bands like Celeste, Batyushka, Urfaust, Drudkh, Altar of Plague. Give a check also to older stuff from Darkthrone, Burzum, or the very first Ulver works, those are Milestones.
For Doom Metal there are a lot of great bands. i can suggest Sleep - Dopesmoker as an album becase I think is a milestone for the genre, or even Mirror Reaper from Bell Witch. i m not someone who loves to put genres in boxes or subgenres in general but I think other Bands that I love as The Body, Indian, Primitive Man, Thou and Cough could fit into Doom Metal but I’m not sure.
I’m not so familiar with avant garde metal but from the example shown on the link you posted i think Zu should fit in that genre, and they are definitely worth to check.

Right, and I would probably like stuff from all over the spectrum, but I feel I just need an entry point and these subgenres are the ones that really stood out from the ones listed in the video. Metal is just so fucking massive it's unbelievable haha :fist:

I don't really understand this "box thing" in music in general. When someone says "this subgenre is usually known from A, B or C things", it doesn't mean you cannot do anything else, right? It's just a description, an indication to what to expect the most. Or I don't know, maybe it has something to do with some of the fans that people want set themselves apart?

Anyway, related stuff <3

Check out Rotting Christ - Heretics, a great entry level black metal and personally my fav black metal band out there. Fucking amazing album. If you want to explore black a little further, I'd suggest Mgła - Exercises In Futility, Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain, Darkthrone - Arctic Thunder and Watain - Lawless Darkness albums.

If you are up for some experimental shit, check out the Sunn O))) (edit:: i see The Convicted already beat me to this one :+) or Stallagh (careful with that one though, probably the most extreme shit you will hear in your life, read the backstory too)

If you are up for some Pink Floyd level quality music, check out the swedish prog/death band Opeth, I especially love their 'Sorceress' album (my avatar here actually hehe)

If you are up for some melancholic stuff, check out the band Sólstafir or Alcest

If you are up for some funky super high energy stuff, check out the band Dragonforce

If you are into some technical / musically complex stuff, check out 'Tool' or 'Stratovarius'

I

I agree ofc. Btw I also get the fact that sometimes is unavoidable, especially for genres like metal which is so manifold, but as you say is better to think about it as an indication in order to orientate in such a big cauldron.

Anyway, I love Sunn O))) too! If you like this kind of drone stuff i suggest you also Nadja. They're mindblowing.

@lilfrenchidiot

The others have done a decent job at giving you some entry level bands, and I don't want to overwhelm you with bands, (btw, +1 on Mgła as well as their side project Kriegsmaschine - amazing "new" band(s)) but I still felt the need to point you towards the French, and French Canadian Black Metal scenes just because they, for the most part have lyrics in French and you might get a kick out of it, if not for anything other than reading the lyrics.
Bands such as Throane, Forteresse, Drastus, Délétère, Spectral Wound

Also, if you're looking for bands similar to a band in the genres you mentioned, just go to https://www.metal-archives.com/ and look up the band you like and navigate to the similar artists tab. For the most part you'll get some decent recommendations from it. (It's a fairly elitist page, so if the band has elements the page admins don't like, like for instance they used to play nu-metal or metalcore or some shit like that, they won't be featured)

Maybe if you wrote some music you wouldn't need 6 kick drums!

Spoiler
Thanks for the recommendation man, this is definitely nice :D I started to listen and can't think of anything else than having massive influences of shoegaze - I even found an MBV cover from the guys :fist:
