There is a deadly virus going around the world. The response has been interesting:
- Deadly virus spreads from a wildlife source in an illegal "wet" market, transferring from wildlife to humans and infecting many people
- Response: Well what can China do really? They are clamping down on those who are spreading misinformation and quarantining those who might be affected. How can you say this is a problem from China? You racist! This is a global problem. Remain calm.
..in the interim, completely ignore the death of the scientist who alerted people to the virus, completely ignore the free movement of people in and out of affected areas, completely ignore the fact that the virus can be passed on through non-human contact (like, how we were to know, we can't just go around assuming things, you racist), turn a blind eye to the suppression of figures of people infected by many countries (like, how are we to check and why should we, it's only a deadly virus spreading around the world, you racist)...remain calm.
- Virus spreads to 1/4 of the globe, many instances arise in Europe. Italy experiences a major outbreak.
- Response: This is a global problem, nothing to do with China. The number of cases in China is decreasing, you see, and the number of cases in Italy is increasing. We need to double our efforts, but of course, remain calm, there is nothing to worry about here.
...At some point, countries start closing their borders and banning people from certain infected countries. Then we have an absolute mass panic driven by the media. "Everybody panic! we just don't know what this virus will do. Of course we can't assume but that's why it is so bad!" Absolutely whipped the whole world into hysteria.
For all their flaws, it is only conservative voices keeping calm and level-headed. While the rest of the world must be on edge all the time, while we suffer terrible economic consequences. This has to be the worst example of leadership in my lifetime (referring to Tedros Adhanom), never thought you could top Theresa May.
