I know it requires a lot of experimentation to make decent layers, but what is your technique to make mid if you want to add more punch to your kick?
I do this (rough steps):
909/club kick -> EQ (cut 60hz) -> Reverb (with negative predelay) -> EQ -> Strong compression (high ratio, small attack) -> EQ (boost mid) -> EQ (pre distortion) -> Distortion (Strong) -> Brickwall
How do YOU make tok/mid punch layers?

How do YOU make tok/mid punch layers?
Purpose, thou art the compass.
I guess it depends on what kind of effect you're after but these days I've been enamoured by The Satan's kicks. I swear there's a bit of hardkick10.wav in his punches.
What I've been doing for those resonant toks is using a synth that generates both a tone anywhere between 450hz-1khz (depending on the type of punch/pitch/effect I'm after) and under that some noise. Its almost like a synth snare gone wrong now that I think about it. I resample it so I can pitch it easily pre-distortion, and then if I want, I can add a pitch envelope to the whole sound. After that, I distort that noise quite heavily with both straight wideband clipping and multiband distortion,. I tend not to EQ too much pre-distortion and prefer to emphasise the frequencies I want to push in the synth first. Post distortion I'll do a bit of transient enhancement to turn that noise into a proper punchy/percussive sound.
If I want some of that low end thump, I'll generate a clubby kick as a layer underneath.

Awesome to see a reply from youaudiofreq wrote:I guess it depends on what kind of effect you're after but these days I've been enamoured by The Satan's kicks. I swear there's a bit of hardkick10.wav in his punches.

70 layers sounds ridiculous I know, and I just tried it for the fun of it, but it actually created a fat sound when I vaguely tried to beat match them with small horizontal adjustments.
I think all the different punch mallets combined to give a rich texture, sound like this:
