What is bitcrushing useful for?

Post by Dj Reaper »

I read that lots of you and perhaps many Hardstyle/Hardcore-Artists use bitcrushers on their sounds. But I don´t get exactely what they do and how they should be used on kicks and other sounds?
I personally tried out the bitcrusher on Sylenth and only thing it does is making the sound somehow fuzzier but much weaker and if overdoine it does something similar like when you grab an FM knob and tweak it totally to the right and at the end there is no sound.

I´d love to understand and be able to hear out that effect from sounds and know how to set it up and on which sounds, perhaps I could get some really cool sounds with it, once knowing what to use it for.

Yes but how should it be used? On my kicks it just takes the bass away, I like the fuzz in the mids and heights but It makes it all sound so sythetic and not bouncing.

Ond what the hell is distorzion on leads for except for f*ucking the quality up? I like to overdrive my squares sometimes but with bitcrushing it would and in a total fuzz and not in a clear sound I guess (I can´t try it now as I´m not on the right computer).

Bitcrusher is used for lowering the quality of the signal, specifically bit rate and sample rate. Try downsampling white noise; you'll understand what it does from there.

Also, look up Ophidian - Butterfly (NOT the VIP). That song is a good example of the benefits of bitcrushing.

Tip from me:
When making a kick, take your mid parts and put Bitcrusher on it, put the mix lower.
Gives your kick a kind of a warmer effect, just try it;)

Don't bump dead threads, unless you have a problem that you can solve.
I'm grumpier than you.

Do people even read these?

Can you elaborate on "mids" - specifically, what frequency range you slap this bitcrusher onto?

Thanks ;)

You can put it on vocals, an examples are Cyber's vocals (he said that in one of his live streaming)
