Distortion - Does anyone get the same problem?

Post by Technical_One »

Does anyone get the same problem when distorting? Currently using Camelcrusher to distort my kick drums.

Alot of people say to distort and play with the filters in the distortion when distortiong your kick drums. But when I seem to distort and play with the filters. It makes my sound muffled and sound not as clear as before. Do you guys get the same problem and how do you overcome or fix the issue it gives when distorting and filtering inside distortion?

You should have more layers , e.g. make one for the low-mids, one for high-mids and one for highs , mix them all together , place a sub layer beneath them , get some final eq , compression / saturation etc , make the tok , mix the tok and the tail together and start testing it :)

@iampsych - I wouldn't split my frequencies just yet until I have a good sounding sound that I want first.

@SCH - Yes I always EQ -> Distort on my chain.

So can anyone help or explain? Do you guys get the same problem when distorting your kicks, that your kick will sound muddy or muffled after some a few distortions. Also when I play around with the filter in the distortion it will make my kick sound more muffled and muddy. Is this a common thing that happens to everyone when they distort? What should I do when I come across this problem.

Do you cut/remove low end or use a low shelve to tame the low frequencies?

sounds like your playing with a lowpass filter, and cutting the high frequencies out.

Yeh, I'm only using 1 distortion plugin all this time which is Camelcrusher. I've been hearing to play with the filter so I'm messing about with the filter in Camelcrusher. But it seems that the filter in it always makes sound muddy. Or am I not suppose to use the filter?

The filter on camelcrusher is a lowpass filter so you are cutting high frequencies when you use it. That is what's making your kick sound muddy.
