EQ and Compression explanation.

Post by cant_find_name »

Hello there harderstate-ers! It's been a while from the time i started visiting your forums and seeking for help and then i decided to join you! So here is my problem..
I'm into hard-dance music from about the age of 10 and i started using FL Studio for hardstyle around the age of 13,now i am 14! At the time i can make pretty good tracks and also have some own vocals but the main problem that haunts me is that my tracks sound "empty" despite that i use a bunch of good effects and harmonic sounds. My problem is that i lack of EQing, mixing and compressing skill and that is because i cannot understand what eq and compressing does and how actually works. I've been seeking the net for tutorials about EQing and compression for a long time but i cant find anything so i would really appreciate it if you could explain me or post some good tutorials.
Thanks in advance!
*NOTE* I dont have any serious skills at music...forget it...i dont have any skills at music at all :p i make all my tracks with just using my ears :p

It's really not hard at all to use the search bar. Funnily enough, it exists so that you can search for things - for example, an EQ or compression tutorial.

You'd learn what equalisers do by fiddling around with one yourself faster than any tutorial could teach you. Understanding how to use them effectively, however, is just something that comes with time and practice as your ears 'develop'.

From what i've understand so far is that with an equalizer you can make a frequency louder or quieter..i dont know if this is right but as you said the best thing is to experiment with eq's so i find out myself the uses. Thanks again!

An equalizers job is to lower or raise a bands volume. The 3 bands are low frequencies, or the bass, mid frequencies and high frequencies. Parametic equalizers like i assume you are using, are simply way more precise. Another word for frequencies would be tone. Dont try shape sound with EQing (unless, in my opinion, its about distortion), an EQ is mostly related to mixing.

Thank you SebbeTg for your reply! Now i am going through a problem that i assume every beginner has gone through. I've finished my first good sounding track after a month and a year of learning but it has that "empty" feeling even though i've used many good sounds and i blame this problem to my missing skills of compressing and equalizing. Now i am experimenting with FL studio's graphic equalizer and it seems to help me a lot and my track already sounds a bit "fuller". After that i am going to do a research on compression and how to use a compressor!

This is common and not just related to compressing and equalising. There are many more elements in producing and mixing involved than just eq and compression. If you really want to learn in-depth and improve your overall quality (which still takes time!), then get a copy of Mike Seniors Mixing in the home studio, and keep it beside you at all times when you are producing. It is invaluable!
