University courses

Post by ChristianHardstyle »

Since in september i will start my last year in the secondary school, i'd like to know more about music-related courses in university. I'd like to study something about sound-design, mastering, mixing etc. Is there anyone who can explain me something about that? Thanks :) :)

(don't know if it's the right section, sorry if it's wrong but i didn't know where to post it :+ )

Not sure how your particular school is set up, but mine let me pick two liberal arts classes of my choice that I need in order to graduate. So even though I am there studying for a Computer Security degree, I've gotten to take a few classes in other subjects.

The two music classes I took were music theory and then composition. Music theory covered how to analyze songs for musical parameters like timbre, pitch, dynamics, ect. ect. and then how those parameters can be changed, layered, and arranged differently across genres and trends through history. Covered a lot of bigger picture ideas and critical listening ability as opposed to actually composing. Which I think is useful for anyone interested in music and applies to every genre. If your school offers anything like that, take that first.

The composition class was literally just making music and then presenting it. This was a bit odd for me though because all of the other students played live acoustic instruments for it and all I could do was just throw tracks on a flashdrive and play it out of their sound system. That on top of the fact that no one ever liked anything I showed off.

One guy played this painfully long Phish cover on guitar and had the whole class applauding on their feet
I showed off a full track I've spent months on and just got blank stares :(

So yeah, if you go into anything composition related, don't expect as much unless it's specifically for digital producing.

would you really like your job to be focused on music? Because I thought about this before and decided it's a bad idea. I want to work at something not related to my hobby. I'm not making music annoying work for me, I'm making it for own purposes only
Purpose, thou art the compass.

You can study a lot of stuff in the University.
I took a course worth 7,5 points in Sound Engineering.
There I learned about how different types of Mics work, how to record in stero.
Some simple Mixing techniques.
Soundwaves, recording techniques etc. it comes a bit in handy I must say :)

IMO... you should study this stuff IF you find it interesting.
Yes, ofc you can learn everything by yourself experimenting and watchin tuts, but some extra points of higher ed + general university knowledge is never bad :)

Yes, but i also would like to keep producing my music. Working in a studio is one of the things i can do studying as an audio engineer, but my aim is to produce soundtracks for movies.

Who says you can't do both? :)
However... one of 'em will likely take up more of your time.

My #1 goal is to produce music, and make enough money to live as I do today. Small apartment with my girlfriend. Simple n clean, not high roller.
Second however if this should fail is to work in a studio somehow... well not janitor.
