Switching to logic
Hey everyone,
Yesterday my laptop crashed and i really need to buy a new pc now!
I am thinking to switching to logic since i used to work with fl studio.
Now i wanted to buy an iMac 27inch http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac? ... tep=config
Now i am just a student and dont have to much money to spend, but i also wanne get a decent machine for music production!
i read alot about the hdd of the imac seems to be slow and you can better get an Fusion 1tb dive...
Also should you suggest to get the i7 over the i5? or does Logic run smoothly with the i5? And is the 8gb Ram enough or should i get the 16GB?
i hope you guys can clear my head and help me get a nice machine to work with logic:)
Cheers,

Imagine building a guitar and then tuning it and then playing it. That's what electronic music is.

Before this descends into the usual "just buy a pc they are better and cheaper blah blah blah",which is usually started by the Fruity armada and people who have never used a mac before.Viron sounds wrote:Hey everyone,

I have a MacBook pro with an i5 and 8 gb ram & a Mid 2011 i5 iMac with 16gb of ram that I used to use for producing, and they both work great with logic. I upgraded to a mac mini i7 with 16gb ram and it performs great too. Ive been solely OSX for about 2 years (sounds like a AA meeting lol) but I can't see me ever going back to windows, and I don't mean just for producing either.
Once you go mac ...
oh and if you do decide to go iMac, make sure you get a SuperDrive with it as the new ones don't have a disk drive.

Thanks for your reactions guys:) it is really helping me!
I am looking for more information about the mac mini now, since i have a very nice 24inch screen and good monitors and everything! and a mac mini is not to expensive compared the iMac. Only thing is, sometimes i like to play a little game and watch a good movie in bluray and i am not sure the mac mini is good enough for this because of its graphic card! And IMO i think the Imac is more around?
I have also been looking for a windows pc and then dual boot it with a mac software aswell.. i think this would be nice aswell because if i wanted to i can still go to fruity loops or windows programs.. but you need to get special hardware to do this "dual boot" and i dont have much experience in building my own pc!
i am not sure yet what to do:(

Regarding this switch between Mac and Windows - it goes both ways
If you're on windows, you can have Mac OS installed and it's called Hackintosh. Now some say it works well, yet others are complaining about stability, there are also a few topics on this forum about this, you be the judge.
But, if you went with Mac, installing Windows would be much easier. Apple has an utility called Boot Camp and you just mount a picture of Windows (or insert a dvd) and it does everything for you. It finds you suitable drivers and the installation is just like on every other computer. Speaking from experience, it is really great. I have 150GB reserved for my Windows partition and when I want to play some games I just switch over
I haven't encountered any problems so far.
So I suggest you go with Mac.

That is really helpful! i didnt think about that at all:) haha!
What mac do you use?
And if i get the iMac? should i immidiatly go with the fusion 1tb drive? i heard it is very hard to replace HDD later on! I will stich with the 8gb RAM first (cause this will be easly to switch later!
Just for making alot of music, playing some games, watching movies and some school work would you guys suggest me to go for the iMac 27inch i7 or i5?
thanks

I bought a mac mini just this thursday to get logic. I can't say I'm not happy with it - logic is a very nice DAW (clip distortion lol). For your information I bought the cheapest one - the one with dual core i5, 4 GB RAM etc. and it runs great. I can really advice you to get a mac mini, and even so you were willing to buy an iMac, so you can go and buy the best mac mini
I just didn't go for a machine that could handle games as i have a gaming pc just by turning my chair

I have MacBook Pro 17 with i5 and iMac27 with i7 (late 2012) and what I described above works great on both.
Yes, definitely Fusion Drive. Difference is really obvious. With Fusion system is booted in seconds (literally!!) I was curious myself, how much would it cost me to change a Fusion Drive from 1 to 3GB. They told me at Apple that the approximate price is 630€, so choose carefully in accordance to your needs, because there is really nothing you can change/add yourself, except ram - that is very easy to add. I went with i7 but my friends, who know a little more about this, told me that i7 is not worth the price, because it's not that much better than i5. But, what you listed above (making music, games, movies, school work), I can do all of that on my 2010 Macbook Pro.
BTW: If you are student and if you are planning on buying a new Apple product, not used, ask for a discount. I think it applies worldwide and is 5% on computers with a valid student identification card
