Where's the missing part?

Post by NEKA »

Thought about opening this up.

Currently, I have many tracks almost done, but I am far from satisfied from them. The biggest reason is because to my ear, they sound plain and really boring. If I compare them to big producers tracks, they have much more drive and flow and you can easily tell when there's a break etc.

Even if my tracks sounds are good, and the structures are as supposed to, where do I go wrong? There isn't anything noticable in them, they just come and go. There isn't a hook in them.

What is the thing to catch the hook? Through mastering, different structures, making effects into many parts (chorus and climax) etc.

HALP

Imo it's all about a good build up to make a Track nice and flowing. If you have that then it's already half the work. Keep the intro & midintro (if you have one) not to monotonous and you should be good to go.
Music needs Character.

The other problem which is also that the tracks are more like "okay this is nice!" but I'm trying to create something "HOLY SHIT OMG!" in them.

Creating "HOLY SHIT OMG" is pretty hard because you have to push the boundaries and by "OMG STUFF" you probably mean something original/unheard of. It might help you to focus on another project, kick, melody...whatever and just open the finished ones later because it might be possible that you heard your tracks too many times and they have become boring to you, although they still sound good. On the other hand, sometimes you will run into interesting stuff completely by accident but I think it is important not to push yourself...so maybe listen/create (to) other genres to either gain perspective or to temporarily switch off your mind. New ideas will much likely come to you when you are relaxed and occupied rather than sitting in front of the almost finished project thinking I need that one FX track to fulfil my mid-intro.

Also, if you want to create something unusual, iZotope Iris can give you some very interesting results. It is literally the "Photoshop" of audio and you will create some crazy sounds for sure.

Hope it helps.

I just looked that one up, and it sounds pretty promising. :)

I would also recommend a program called Paul's Extreme Stretch, AKA paulstretch. Basically, you load a sample into the program, and it will stretch the sample and smooth it out. It's really great for making long sounds such as pads, smooth soundscapes, etc.

There's nothing wrong with that, but knowing and hearing structures are different things. If you know a good structure , you can get away with it without ever really hearing it. What I've been noticing in my works, - as I progress in my learnings - being random has yielded much more rewarding results than blindly trying to fit everything into place. You have a really unique sound, and a good one imo. So keep doing what you do but be random from time to time. If you hear something you really like, you can then implement it to your piece with your producing tricks.

Personally I think that good fx and atmosphere are more important than a good lead...

The thing is, everything needs to be good. A HOLY SHIT OMG track needs an awesome melody, awesome kick, awesome structure, etc. And that comes with a lot of practice and time I guess. I guess a producer just has to live with the fact, that the top tracks will (always) sound a little better ^^

Have you already tried to listen to a Remake of a good Track on youtube, and comparing it to the original one? Look what the Top Producer makes better, and do the same with your track.

You already have the answer.

The point is, you're looking for a magic solution that doesn't exist. Keep practicing and you'll get better. If your melody sounds boring, make it more interesting. If your intro lacks drive, make changes until it sounds good. It's that simple (and difficult at the same time). No magic tools or secret techniques, just practice. It will take some time but one day you will see the results.
