Distortion question

Post by DJSpadez »

Hello Harderstate. New here. Apologies if this already a thread but I've been trying to figure out for weeks on end how to create those 'distorted fillers' as I like to call it. For example, at 2:06 to 2:08. And/or this at 1:15-1:20. Love that stuff so much. I know distortion and filtering is involved, but i just can't find the method of anything remotely close. Do they take their initial kick and morph it into that sound or something similar? What plug-ins, methods are involved? I've experimented with Camelphat, Ohmicide, Izotope, etc. and all turns out garbage. It could just be me but any insight or examples would be greattt. It's a lot harder trying to explain what im talking about in writing. Well...hope you can help! thx :)

Welcome to the forum ;)
But this is the wrong section, maybe a mod can move it right away??

To your question, in the stereotuners example its defo a distorted fx kick (you can google that up, you'll find a few tutorials regarding fx kicks).
Basically you take your kick and guide it through a bandpass filter. additionally you can distort it ofc. But in my case for instance, FX kicks never turn out exactly how I want them to be, its just a process of failure and of trying again.
Good luck

For these kicks, the output is heavily dependant on the input. In other words, a shit kick will = a shit fx kick (usually).
This applies to you as well OP, as that could be why you haven't been successful.

Not really, if you put the correct amount of resonance and distortion, you can turn a shit kick into a badass fx kick, trust me. :p

You're right. I also shouldn't have worded it like that. I should've said it's a more difficult process, but possible nonetheless. Sorry.

To create an effective Fx Kick, you normally filter out low or high frequenties and re-EQ and distord it. But you need a good kick if you want to be succesfull. There are plenty ways to do this so with lots of plugins. But its a matter of taste about how exactly you want it to be.

Wow, thanks for quick and polite responses guys! I kinda like this site _O_ that was all helpful, especially the video. Now i actually feel stupid for asking that Q. :p Well I mostly DJ and been (trying) to produce for a few years off and on, just trying to increase my knowledge about this stuff. I absolutely love Logics stock plug-ins but i just can't get the hang of that program (I even took a college class on it, eh, not for me lol) Well, I'll do my part and try to help anyone's Q's even though i don't know too much. If interested you can check out what I've made at soundcloud.com/dj_spadez Just bear in mind that these are nowhere close to professional and are a bit old. Thanks again! :D

The most important element we use to turn a normal kick into an FX kick is Camelphat3. We select the MM filter to "Bandpass Fat" and adjust the Cutoff and Resonance (Res). Play around with the last two and you can tweak very nice sounds out of your kick! At the BP Filter you can get the low out of your kick (otherwise it won't work like it should) but you can also use an Equalizer for it (like Fabfilter Pro-Q). You should to this first. After this the distortion and EQ are the most important to make it fit into your track. The Fruity Waveshaper can really help to give your FX Kickdrum an unique style if you use it the wright way (play around with it!!).

Long story short;
1. Cut off the low freqz.
2. Bandpass Fat at Camelphat3.
3. EQ and distort.
4. Make it unique (with for example Fruity Waveshaper).

Hopefully it will help you out :)

^Thanks guys :) btw your guys' music is awesome. Love that kick! Kind of reminds me of Crypsis in a sense. I...ah I don't even wanna go about how that was achieved. Speaking of which, I kind of want to post a kick thread. Even though theres tons, I know its EQ&Dist, etc, but most the time i end up with an obnoxious overdrived "metal guitar" sound. If theres any links to this specific problem that'd be great. Before I post something and get yelled at
