Vocoder help

Post by FreakshowDJ »

Hey all,

I have a question wich has ben bothering me for a while. It's about the vocoder effect some producers use (for example, Headhunterz used it in the Lessons in Love remix, and Atmozfears & Audiotricz used it in their new track too) It's a normal vocal, with some sort of vocoder beneath it. I tried to recreate it. Not that I want to copy it, but I'm working on a track with a vocal in it wich sounds perfectly suitable for me to put that effect on. I tried it with Fruity Vocoder, Vocodex etc, pitch down, distortion etc. But it doesn't sound as clear as in the examples listed. When I try to do it, it's more of a weird sound than actually a vocal. In the examples listed, you can clearly hear what the vocalist says with the vocoder effect, and that's not the case if I do it.

I also noticed that the effect HHZ and Atmozfears did sounds almost EXACTLY the same. I mean like, to perfection. Maybe they used some sort of preset for it? I really want to do this, because I think it's awesome and it can be used to make some great effects for in the mid intro too.

HALP!

I was just listening to the HHZ track you mentioned. Are you talking about the vocal effect at 1:44? I think it has more to do with the "synth" you're feeding into the vocoder than the vocoder itself.

Could you also post a sample, so I can see where the problem lies?

yeah exactly at that part. I try to post an example tonight. It's really when I try it, it's more like a weird sound, really bubbly than this.

It's been said so often that there's a topic where you can ask how to make certain sounds, but anyway.
I don't actually think it's a vocoder, or at least I don't think the entire vocal itself is one vocoded layer. It sounds to me as though there's another layer underneath the vocal playing at a lower pitch with a distorted/'crunchy' sound to it. Now, whether or not that layer itself is vocoded to help get the effect, I'm not sure, but I'm pretty certain that the vocal is comprised of more than one layer, and the whole thing isn't just one vocoded file. You can hear a similar effect in Frontliner's 'Death Of A Demon' :
