To answer your question. you should just try to mess arround with it and see if you can hear any difference.
Is the EQ even activated when you put it in the mixer? If not, then that might answer your question on why you can't hear any difference.

There's nothing wrong with FL's native EQ's. The Parametric EQ2 is still one of the best parametric EQ's I've seen in any DAW. The ones in Renoise piss me off so bad, and the ones in Logic annoy me with how they handle the Q or Resonance of the bands.

What's up with peple saying this. For some reason it seems to be commonly accepted that image-line's parametric eq is worse than other third party ones(like sonalksis, fabfilter and so on), but this is not true.

Mix in headphones unless your studio is acoustically treated by a professional.

Trust your ears, do NOT trust meters.

Use a spectrum analyzer on EVERY channel. When set properly, they do NOT lie and will give you the best representation of your track.

Don't assume that since you're making hardstyle that a low shelf eq boost is appropriate. The bass should only peak by a handful of Db over the rest of your mix.

Bus your kick and snare together.

Do not be afraid to pull back the volume faders. You can always make your track 'louder' after mixing. You want to mix with as much headroom as possible, and high volume faders won't make that easy. A master peak of -6 to -3Db is great to have on your final mixdown.

Reverb eats the shit out of headroom.

Do not be afraid to bounce sections to audio from Midi. This will save a LOT of CPU power.

Most people arrive at this conclusion after comparing two eqs on the same loop with the same boosts and cuts. It's all about the total control over you sound fitting to your need/preference.
