Sorting your digital music

Post by MarlboroMan »

I dunno If there is already a topic for this, if it is, feel free to close this one. If it is the wrong section please move it to the right :)

I'm gonna format my harddrive in the next time and change from XP to Win 7 and with that I want to set up my music collection in a new way.

Currently i've sorted my music this way. Music\Artistname\album
Those who are basically the same artists like Kasparov/Williams Syndrome/Roughstyler share their releases in one folder here it is Williams Syndrome f.e.. But now with collecting more and more music, this all gets quite messy. Cause some release are "Artist A & Artist B" (Dunno where to put this then either under Artist A or Artist B). I thought about to put it under Labelname\Year*\Release

* Not sure about year though

Maybe some of you would share your sorting systems here, so that I can get some advice.

Either artist straight away for artists that ahve pretty few releases on my HDD like Weichentechnikk or by label first. Then a few Various Hardcore/style/techno/trance/etc folders for artists with just one or two tracks...
I'm grumpier than you.

Do people even read these?

Sorting by Label with a folder named with the Cat Nr. and then the release name is the best choise if your are following them.

If not you can sort by Year / Month.

That's keen! I actually wanted to do label/cat but I ended up with \[Z]\[Zatox]\ for example. It does its job pretty good I must say.

I got my electronic music sorted by labels (f.e. music/labels/[AVIO] AVIO Records/(AVIO 118) Alphaverb - Overdrive Ya Woofah), with an extra folder for mix cd's, albums and compilations. Best way to organize your stuff imo. Non-electronic music i got sorted by genre / artists

Well, I'm a hobby-dj, and I've got 2 folders. 1 is called DJ, 1 is called NON-DJ.
In my DJ folder I put everything that I like and would play at a party, and in my NON-DJ folder I put stuff that I don't really like or not enough to play at a party.
