When someone says "this subgenre is usually known from A, B or C things", it doesn't mean you cannot do anything else, right? It's just a description, an indication to what to expect the most. Or I don't know, maybe it has something to do with some of the fans that people want set themselves apart?

Anyway, related stuff <3

I agree ofc. Btw I also get the fact that sometimes is unavoidable, especially for genres like metal which is so manifold, but as you say is better to think about it as an indication in order to orientate in such a big cauldron.

Anyway, I love Sunn O))) too! If you like this kind of drone stuff i suggest you also Nadja. They're mindblowing.

@lilfrenchidiot

The others have done a decent job at giving you some entry level bands, and I don't want to overwhelm you with bands, (btw, +1 on Mgła as well as their side project Kriegsmaschine - amazing "new" band(s)) but I still felt the need to point you towards the French, and French Canadian Black Metal scenes just because they, for the most part have lyrics in French and you might get a kick out of it, if not for anything other than reading the lyrics.
Bands such as Throane, Forteresse, Drastus, Délétère, Spectral Wound

Also, if you're looking for bands similar to a band in the genres you mentioned, just go to https://www.metal-archives.com/ and look up the band you like and navigate to the similar artists tab. For the most part you'll get some decent recommendations from it. (It's a fairly elitist page, so if the band has elements the page admins don't like, like for instance they used to play nu-metal or metalcore or some shit like that, they won't be featured)

Maybe if you wrote some music you wouldn't need 6 kick drums!

Spoiler
Thanks for the recommendation man, this is definitely nice :D I started to listen and can't think of anything else than having massive influences of shoegaze - I even found an MBV cover from the guys :fist:

Whooooa, that first part before the "break" (or it's the first track according to the tracklist but it's very similar to the rest... whatever) is beautiful! However I can't get over those screamings afterwards... I mean - and this might sound like a blasphemy to many of you haha - it's the thing that most of the time ruins this type of metal to me. Even if it somewhat blends into the atmosphere :+

If anyone's missing Dissection, give The Spirit a try. (This is their newest album, released in February) Sounds an awful lot like The Somberlain/Storm of the Light's Bane -era Dissection.

On another note, the titans from Ulcerate released their latest album very recently, and they continue their tradition of not making a single bad album. Probably their most accessible album they've ever made, but it's still absolutely incredible.
If you're into Technical Death Metal with a large emphasis on atmosphere, give them a listen. Jamie Saint Merat on drums is especially fantastic.

well, it is a metal tune? :? and not a bad one while we are at it... never cared particularly much about Nickelback but never understood the hate on them tbh, there are way, way worse bands out there imo
