Inspiration, when you are not at home.

Post by Crankx »

Often when i ride with train or other transport, i get some ideas for beats. I can hear the actual beat in my head, but today in the train was just unreal. I was suddenly getting an idea, and i could hear every sound so clearly, i knew exactly how to put it together, and i was like if i forget this im gonna destroy something, i knew it was huge .

What would you do if you got an out of this world idea for any type of music you create ? How do you remember it ?

Forcing Insperation is never giving the same result, no matter how you look at it. Yesterday i was about to go to bed, had to go to school next day, but then i got this amazing idea for a Beat in the night, i got up and started working and decided to skip school. So worth it, got a bunch of rappers interested in buying exclusive rights, and mostly when i force insperation while making beats, i doubt them but this time, no doubt at all.

But still forgetting that idea in the train, is like even worth than when i earned 500 euro on Live-Betting and then lost them, because i couldn't get enough ($£€)

Any tips and experience with this ?

Write it down, scribble, draw, etc. etc. , and later when looking at your notes it will come back to you.

Maybe mobile DAWs for smartphones/tablets, like Caustic or FL Studio Mobile? I've got full version of Caustic on my Xperia, and it's pretty good, even for hardstyle and especially for screeches :p

I always make notes on my smartphone... I try to describe it to myself as exact as possible, part after part.
I know this phenomenon too, you're not alone ;)

I use Google Docs to save any ideas I get in the cloud. I have a document filled with ideas I came up with at work, in the shower, during a party - whatever. Just use your smartphone or a computer anywhere to log in and start typing/drawing something in Docs.

the answer is very simple get a laptop XD DAW mobile apps are not worth it cuz they don't really give you a proper result and they are limited in functionality. So what you do is whenever something hits you input it there a laptop is very useful nowadays and those with i7 processors just work like a desktop pc XD

Laptops can't fit in pockets. Also, the battery only lasts a few hours, and even if you hibernate it every time, it's somewhat time consuming to set up again, just to jot down ideas. Mobiles apps may not have as many features, but it's faster to set up, and you don't really need that many features when you're just writing down ideas in transit. ;)

I tried out a few iOS daw's but found none were really expressive enough to get out what i had in my head. What I do is always, always keep a notebook on hand, then if i have some fantastic ideas i try and figure out how i'd make those sounds and then write THAT down. I used to try and write down the ideas themselves but found it impossible... "crazy screeches!!!! OMG with pitch automation then in comes the big kick..." nah. Another technique i find really useful is when i'm listening to music in bed (you know.. when you're really just listening and nothing else), I try and reverse engineer how the sounds in the track i'm listening to were made, then write that down. When I then go and do the process in FL, i almost never ever end up with the intended result, but i do always end up learning something useful.
