Other forms of EDM producing

Post by Emre »

I don't know if this in the right topic, but I have a huge, obsessive love for edm music. Specifically hardstyle, but also electro/house/progressive house/sometimes dubstep/complextro etc. Now I'm not focused alot on anything else than hardstyle, but simply love it all, so, what are good plugins to download or buy to make electro/complextro-ish tracks, with alot of sounds which flow together very well, and what do I need to know? I'm not a guy that dreams about getting popular or something, but I want to let out my emotions in my music. I never produced before, except opening fl studio and making basic melody's, but i REALLY want to try.

I'm a fan of tracks with high production quality, that sound 'difficult' to make. Complex etc. Like Bas Oskam/TVDS, you know what I mean. Technic tracks.

tl;dr:

What do I need to know about notes/rhythm/which plugins I need to get if I want to make Electro/Progressive house/complextro?

THANKS alot.

:)

another forms? i thought this thread will be like "hey, i only have a sledgehammer, an acoustic guitar, a panflute, and a 10-year old computer, how can i creat an EDM-track using only these things?"... and you're asking about plugins... come on, man! don't be so misleading!

for my ambient stuff i use a lot of unprocessed recordings that i timestretch to hell and back
for trance and electro you're pretty set with the same synths as you have them in hardstyle
what's more important is to learn different structures and different sound design
nexus, massive, sylenth, etc are used in pretty much every genre right now, even hip hop
another good example is how people make ALL kinds of music with reason,
which used to be just limited to it's own VSTs without any option to "upgrade"

think like that: if you have canvas and paint the style is just up to you :3

As for plugins, I'd recommend Massive. FM synthesis is even more awesome for electro basslines, but also a lot harder. Also you can make awesome stuff using a vocal to modulate a bass through a vocoder(kinda the same idea as with FM synthesis) but again, that kinda stuff is a bit more advanced.

With my trance and house releases, I also use the same plugins eg: Sylenth, V-station, Massive are all good.

I have Massive and Sylenth1. The problem is, I have no idea what I'm doing. I can watch tutorials, turn some knobs etc and make a melody. But I have no idea what I just did. I need to learn knowledge about synthesis, music production etc.. are there any cursusses in NL? I also don't have a problem with reading alot of theory. Any help is welcome :)

Tbh some things are just trial and error, its always good to use tutorials but they only take you so far.
