When using a cutoff, why is there a crackling sound as the synth opens up?

When using a cutoff, why is there a crackling sound as the synth opens up?
Usually when opening up a synth from a low pass filter cutoff the sound begins to crackle and pop. What is the issue going on here?
When you move the cutoff filter? Probably too much resonance on the sound..
If not... then maybe your soundcard latency settings, that's all I know of that would make it really crackle/pop tbh
