It could be both. but as I observed, the sound you refering to is mainly refers to a kick fx, It's basically a kick, but with more variations of frequencies or cutoff amount of the distortion that is layering on top of it to make it sound more raw and more distorted so to speak (this is my easiest explaination i can get).
