Re: Sylenth1 - Kicks

MICROTONIC FTW!
it just fits me the most.. though waldorf largo also isnt to bad... hydra also is ok, but i prefer microtonic..
and sylenth i never tried.. for kicks.. but for leads the most epic thing :) (z3ta too ;))
for distortion i mostly use ohmicide, camelphat3 and quadrafuzz, but sometimes devastor too... for the basses, i use every kind of vst.. sometimes hydra, sometimes sylenth, sometimes v-station...

in my huble opinion, microtonic is just boring and veeeery limited. at least it's a synth with 1x osc (sine/triangle/saw) plus an Attack Decay (pretty limitate to also limited standard ADSR) a veeeery linear (noise/sine/ramp) pitch mod, and some built in effect (single band eq plus overdrive)
You can do this (and a lot more) nowadays with quite everything in the market
probably started before you were born

Sylenth is a great vst IMO.... If your looking for kicks, it can take a bit of work but you can make good sounding punches with tails that pitch up/down slowly with the LFO, and a wobble with the bass on the second LFO, or w.e you want...

Drumatic 3 is a nice free VST that can make some cool 808/909 type kicks and perccusions! I highly reccomend using these 2 and tweaking the pitch mod using sines/triangles for the base of your kicks... add distortion to taste

Surfino is right about microtonic^ You can do all it does, and more with sylenth alone...

Granted these 2 are less preset friendly in terms of perccusion, but they are very simple to mod and use!

Ok so I've heard and read (in the qlimax kick thread) about the tail for the kick.

and I'm not sure what it is. Can someone explain to me what it is and how do you make it?

at the moment when i need a kick i just take 3x osc make 3 osc with sine on it, drop to c6 and make the volume filter short, and distort it. then add a bass sound do it. and what is this tail thing ?

can anyone help ?

If a hardstyle kick sounds like "kong," the tail is the part that goes "ong." It can be a layer or a single sound.

To be honest, I'm not too sure myself. Usually, I just do one instance of microtonic with a bunch of distortion and eq'ing, layered with a bass. I'm kinda sketchy about the whole tok/distorted bass/whatever thing, it just seems like trying to do something that isn't.

I mean, if you look at the videos from famous producers(headhunterz, zany, toneshifters, etc.), they all say that they're using a 909 with distortion and equalizing... So, I'm even more skeptical about it.

So, in reality, the tail is unnecessary... I suppose.

The tail is merely the bass after the intial punch. Everyone talks about different parts of a kick (Tok, Punch, Bass etc.) and some people assume (me included) they are the different layers of one kick. In reality they are just describing the sounds of what should be in a kick, as ProjectFreakuence said, one 909 with a long decay for the tail + Dist & EQ is all you need.

To stop all this confusion, someone should really make a definitive kick creation topic and make a mod sticky it.

If you've got a bass layer, you've got a tail, its the same thing. Make it longer if its not noticable, either by using the envelope in hydra or making the midi note longer.

I'm pretty good with the bass and punch, but how do you make the sub bass? Everyone is so secretive about it, I swear if I was good at producing I'd almost tell people 100% how I do it. Obviously I wouldnt want them to know exactly how I did it, but I'd atleast offer some help. Anyways, someone know how to make a subbass, and can it be made in the one kick without all this tok, bass, tail, layering stuff.
