Hey man, is that you on discogs complaining about the sound quality of the records in the defqon 1 box set? I'm finally in a position to buy if I can find a copy priced not too crazy that will ship to the uk, but won't be willing to pay as much if it sounds like shit...

if it is you, can you tell me, is it the same issue as with the qlimax vinyl? I was disappointed that I have to crank up the gain to get it anywhere near mixable with any of my other records and the tracks just sound really quiet.... also, are scrap attack etc also poorly pressed compared to the originals?

also, I know you got the 2019 defqon vinyl, does that have a similar issue, or is it properly mastered for vinyl?

Yo, yeah that would be me.

The box set sounds better then the Qlimax vinyl, especially in the respect it's not as silent, however if you want to mix them with some vinyls from the late 00s era you will have to crank the volume up a bit and it does sound a bit underwhelming compared to records from that era. Yeah, an improvement from the Qlimax vinyl, but it still sounds nowhere near as good as it could be sounding. I'm quite sure they just sent the digital masters out to the pressing plant and did not really bother with vinyl masters too much. It's an awesome collectors item, it looks impressive and to me a total must have, so I don't really regret spending 300eur on it, even though it is indeed a bit shame they slacked the mastering off. The One Tribe vinyl suffers the similar problem, but it sounds better then the Qlimax vinyl.

thanks, yeah I'm gonna keep an eye on the price I think, I saw one listed the other day for 800 euros

its a shame they haven't bothered properly mastering them, as some of the more recent tracks would be pounding lol

I'm still undecided as there are actually only 3 of the records I actually want, and I could buy scrap attack anyway so only 2 I couldn't get elsewhere

I get that its a collectors thing and I guess it would be cool to have them all, but in reality I don't know if I can justify paying more than £200 for it as I'm not really bothered about having most of them...

was hoping maybe q-dance would at least repress primal energy for this year, as it was this years anthem but maybe wishful thinking....

fuck these discogs speculators having these records sat around unopened lol - its a shame it couldn't be regulated like ticket swap etc, where you're not allowed to resell for more than 20% or whatever

It fucking sucks indeed, but honestly I have no idea what to do about it. This is basically vinyl collecting 2021, it's not a problem exclusive to hardstyle unfortunately. Just a couple of days ago I found out that Nightwish is releasing a reedition of their album Once on a beautiful multicolored splatter vinyl. Guess what, limited to 300 copies and sold out within a couple of days, long after I found out they are releasing it. Was up for a preorder for 26eur on the Nuclear Blast website, it will most likely be sold on discogs for some 80+ eur the moment they will start to ship it.

Vinyl market has changed. Only selected stuff gets released on vinyl these days and the emissions are strictly limited, unlike 15 years ago when you had every single out there getting a vinyl released and there were absolutely no issues with selling out (and if so they did a repress quick). In 2021, you miss your presale chance, you are fucked. I hate how it works, but I guess that's the price to be paid for vinyls being popular again which I absolutely love.

And yeah, well, as long as there will be people willing to pay those scalping prices, these practices will exist. A simply solution would be either to put strict one article per person restrictions for presales or to stop those damn super ultra mega exclusive emissions that sell out within 3 days and make a normal emission available for everyone. Why basically noone who releases vinyls nowadays does that anymore is beyond my understanding. Perhaps they don't want to take risks, perhaps they want that stuff to be more desirable this way, don't know. I'm not a marketing specialist. But it sucks ass. If I was an artist I would be ultra pissed off about scalper ripping of my fans. I don't ever see discogs stepping into this, it's a slippery slope with too many ways how it could easily go wrong (eg. where do you draw the line, how do you balance the demand/supply plus you would most likely just have those scalpers move to ebay).

But yeah, as much as I hate to admit, I do purchase from those fucks every now and then, there is just some stuff like the Defqon anthem box which is just too tempting to have and as long as this is the only way if you miss those couple hours lasting presales... The only effective way to battle this is to subscribe to all the possible newsletters, follow all the artists and labels on social media, actively look up info about upcoming presales and releases (for example Phuture Noize will be releasing his latest EP on vinyl sometimes in foreseeable future) and have an extra budget for these out of the blue vinyl releases sitting aside for these occasions.

Not all Hardstyle obviously but still related for the most part. It feels good ordering vinyl again, despite the cost.
