Re: Mathematics and Music

Theory has much to do with math as well, we just don't see music that way. Have a quick look over this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_and_mathematics) or just check Pythagoras research on music. Also, unit of frequency is Hertz. It's all connected.

I dont think that this thread was about mathematic in theory of music. It was about people that are good in maths are good in making music which is more than just the theory

Everything you do while producing has a lot of math involved. If you have proper knowledge you're a few steps ahead of the rest.

Of course understanding what technically is done in all steps involves math knowledge (in many cases on a high level). But imo producing requires more logic than maths. You always need to keep in mind tr sound flow, where it passes first in the mixer, where later and why it is affected by various settings. When you develope an ear and have a clear idea on what is all going on in the same time, you will be able to make decisions with much more accuracy.

i'm 'okish' at maths but most of my musical compositions are mostly based on careful logic...
not to mention that i was diving into fractal music and other stuff for a long time.
every chord progression is an equation, every melody a derviative, the counterpoint is the integral...
it's not like a lay down my melodies just on paper, but for me knowing the mathematical and theoretical basics of music is what actually makes it possible for me to create melodies... it's a symbiosis of both elements: science and art. sometimes i have a progression laid out carefully and then i just go nuts on my keys, sometimes i just hit the chords and then carefully lay a melody around it...

blerghblerghbla tl:dr: zanshi is a nerd.
