To add to this: KNOW or Pick a key for your song. When you got a key, you know what scales you can use. If you know what scales to use, you have a set of matching major and minor triads (chords) which you can give extra character.
Study a bit on chord progressions, and you will know what to play and when to play it.
If you stick with this system, everything you do is gonna sound "right".
Not cut from the same mold!
