Snare sound design for hardstyle

Post by bloodlord1989 »

I took a look at a snare sample and analyzed the wave with many tools. Then i made my own with a very complicated method of resampling and distortion. I used a similar method of distortion, phaser, reverb and EQ used to make a Hardstyle kick, but the opposite way taking away alot of the low,but leaving some. Didn't layer anything with it or used any white noise and I added a little FM done in sytrus. After all the distortion and EQing i resampled it in Harmor with alot of complicated modulation with spreading pitch to bring out some noise in certain areas, distortion, reverb, and Eq . Resampled it again doing the same process, but not using distortion and adding in Harmor's compression. The result was completely different from the snare i analyzed and tried to make it sound like. My snare compared to the sample sounds more like a real snare and doesn't have a too much harshness of white noise. The snap of the snare i made sounds rounded and the sample snare has a snap that sounds very sharp. I was actually going for a sharp snap, but with a release not so harsh like in the sample. Im not sure if a sharp snap better then a rounded snap for hardstyle or the other way around. The sample i tried to recreate was from a sample pack that has some hardstyle kicks, but they were not very good or real hardstyle kicks so i'm not sure if this was a sample to follow.

I don't remember where i downloaded it,but it was Hex2K7. Samples are good for reference, but there's not alot of good ones out there for free.

This doesn't help anyone I'm afraid. It's just a text about you making a snare without us having any sort of reference.
I'm grumpier than you.

Do people even read these?

I suppose you can make a decent snare with FM synthesis but that's tedious, why not just get a 909 snare and add some distortion and EQ to it with a limiter and compressor, That's what I do

I made some hihats with FM synthesis but wouldn't go as far as making a snare or clap :p

You can make snares with additive synthesis as well very easily, as well as hi hats.

Yeah, i actually used some additive and subtractive methods with filter's in harmor when resampling and had the resonance on a envelope automation. I combined alot of synthesis methods just to create one sound and anything that works can be used in combination . What ever idea's you have you can combine together with moderation to get a unique sound. I don't know about other people, but when i use very few methods i tend to over do it to get a unique sound. Kind of like adding way too much salt on french fries just so it can taste good, but it ends up being too salty.

Resample the hihat and mess with the play speed of it. Many sounds can be made with resampling.
