Nope, it's not that you really need that plugin. But it really can help you to make it easier. I make my kicks in fl. And i Eq and distort all the time. I just made a nice Kick with this Plug-In ;)
And yes, it's possible to create a nice Kick without the Logic Clip Distortion ;)

The problem that we are ending up with now is people saying "Oh, I saw [X producer] use this in their livestream so it must be the right way to do it". In reality training your ears, knowing how EQ and distortion work together and hard work are what makes a good kick as opposed to the plugins that you use. Personally, I don't really like Trash or Trash 2 but a lot of people go in for those. I personally use Camelphat, Logic's Overdrive and Ohmicide as my main distortion plugins of choice but I play around with others too to see what kind of sound I can get out of them. There's no right or wrong plugins to use.

May sound funny, but I use it in EVERY kick. :D
Together with the right EQ'ing you get the result you want. Just be patient and creative. :p

Melda Limiter. It's not for distortion but when you push the gain it has nice effects(messes the low end though)

Edit: it's clip distortion btw

Frontliner uses logic for kicks, he even said so in his tutorial lol anyways thats getting off topic!
