Seating distance to monitors?

Post by thesh3ll »

while I was listening to a few tracks I noticed that I could hear the lower end of the bass a lot better when I moved about 2 meters back from my monitors :? and when I am about 1 foot away from the monitors I can hear barely any low-end bass at all.. what is the solution to this?

One thing is wrong with this picture, the triangle has to end right behind your head, not in front of your head (the lines should pass your ears).
Having some good acoustic treatment can also help if you are experiencing low frequency cancellation due to reflections.

if you got some close-range monitors like the KRK Rp5-6 for example your ears should be about 100-120cm away from the speaker for a linear sound experience.

and that the bass/lows seem to be stronger if you go further away is normal. do some research about physical audio behaviour ;)

I've found the best listening experience by duct taping (lots of duct tape) my monitors to the ceiling above me.

In all seriousness, the triangle option is the best. Don't be surprised, however, if you don't get the most ideal bass as a result. Some monitors are better than others at linear.

I have experienced the same thing with going back with my chair a bit. Since I got the monitors (I got that M-Audio webpage as flyer with my monitors :+ ) I'm using the triangle position, but in my case is my quite small room the problem, it's acoustic characteristics are just terrible

This is because lower frequencies take longer to complete a whole wave cycle compared to higher frequencies.

I think it's like ~17 meters for 20Hz.

This. But the problems with longer distances is that the listener will get less of a direct sound and more reflections from the listening environment. Distances that are fractions of the 'optimum' distance of the desired frequencies can work too, ie: 1/2 or even 1/4.

Sitting 17m from your monitors is simply not practical. I prefer 1.5 - 2m.

Unless you have hundreds of thousands to perfectly design a customised room, everything will be a compromise. Its finding a compromise that works for you is what's best.

I think hearing the subbass isnt that important as long as you keep an eye on a visualizer.
