Postby DJ Y-Know » 26 Apr 2012, 17:32

Hello folks,

I'm planning to do a big investment in studio hardware. But i'm not really familiar with the great stuff and brands. What should I begin with? I only got a Midi keyboard at the moment

Imagine building a guitar and then tuning it and then playing it. That's what electronic music is.

Big investment? (If you have a bit of money...)

I'd go for a nice Mac Pro/or a good spec PC, Genelec 8040A's, Acoustic treatment (foam), Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 Audio Interface, Virus TI2.

TheRavestyler:ps. u dont really need a midi keyboard

Why?
Better and faster results WITH a midi keyboard (H)
For a cool studio, 2 screens a good pc or mac 2 monitors (KRK, Genelec,...)
A DAW that you like the most,
hardware: Waldorf blofeld, Virus Access (b,c,ti,snow)

Great synth! Love mine, shame one of the knobs is broken on mine :(

But a plus 1 from me for it.

Now you´re just summing up pretty much the most expensive and obvious stuff you can think of but is it useful? Doubt it.

Well, it's all up to you what you need/want. What do you consider a big investment? What is your budget? Etc. But yeah, if you want a studio, at least get an audio interface and monitors. What monitors? I can give no useful information on that, no-one can, since choosing monitors totally comes down to your own personal preferences. Yeah, KRK and Genelec are some pretty common brands that lots of people use(I really like the KRK rp6 myself) but you may prefer Adams or Mackies or whatever, so be sure to go to a big music hardware store(like Bax-shop in Goes, or Feedback(I went to Feedback Rotterdam, but they have shops in Apeldoorn, Utrecht and Eindhoven too, though I don't know how much monitors they have in the last 3 shops, Rotterdam had a lot)) and test them out. Also, I'd recommend some decent headphones(got the KRK KNS-6400 wich I like a lot) but again, that's depending on your personal taste and budget.

Synths? I'd wait with that. Do you think it'd be really needed to buy monitors, interface, headphones, synths etcetera at once? Also, if you've got money for it get acoustic treatment indeed; it works(but that also depends on your room a lot. I'm lucky to have not bad acoustics, while others have the bass flying around everywhere). Try clapping your hands, do you hear any reverb or so? If you hear one pretty well, I'd definitely get acoustic treatment. And try a short kick(an actual kickdrum, like a 909 kick, not the distorted things), play it through your headphones and then through your speakers and compare. Does it suddenly get a lot more bassy tail on speakers? Get basstraps.

And if you really want a synth, I'd go to a shop and try out some(Tested one of those Clavia Nord Stages, which is partly a synth, the sound coming from it is amazing, but definitely not worth like 2000+ euros to me. Also played with a Roland GAIA but it didn't sound much better than any VST, so don't just blindly buy one.).

Good luck.

producing without 2 screens is crap as hell
anyways i use cubase so without its freakin annoying
The Mixer of Cubase for example covers the Whole fcking screen
1.Screen for Arangement synth editing , midi and stuff
2.Screen for the Mixer , Mixing , Mastering and this stuff and Metering , Analyzing ,....
