Well, gabber is what I know Amsterdam(?) slang for mate, and being a gabber means you wear the typical clothing and the typical hairstyles. But the genre have always been called Hardcore, Its only called anything else outside Holland really.. Or well, basically everyone here says Hardcore so I could guess Hardcore is the most common name in Europe except the UK...

Tha Rippah should be able to fill any gaps and correct me if I went wrong somewhere..
I'm grumpier than you.

Do people even read these?

The word 'gabber' comes from Yiddish (so I get how you figured Amsterdam) and does indeed mean mate or friend. In the 90s being a gabber meant wearing the specific clothes and hairstyle. But nowadays, when used, it basically just refers to one who listen to hardcore music.

People who fit the description of the clothing (in NL) are mostly low-educated people and will more likely listen to hip-hop nowadays.

so to me and the other Australian that said they liked listening to gabber, it's still gabber? We can't really say hardcore way over here or we could mean one of fifteen thousand different things.

Most aussie/UK people I've spoken to use Hardcore as a word to describe UK Hardcore/modern happy Hardcore. Always confuses me.

OT; Catscan - Customized may be added to this topic <3
