What year has been the best for hardstyle?

Postby cccc5 » 17 Jul 2017, 08:00

<- Been into hardstyle since 2008, writing my personal opinions.

For me hardstyle has always been about the progression from minimal snare patterns or kicks all the way to the final climax and then fading back slowly. The most emotionally powerful tracks I've ever heard are from this genre, theres just something truly magical about it when done right.

From the beginning, hardstyle stayed as a very unknown genre for a long time. 2007-2008 it slowly started moving into a more melodic style, staying pretty similar until somewhere in 2011-2013 when the major raw/euphoric split happened. Ever since that it seemed like hardstyle was kind of going downhill for my taste, but this year has really saved my hope.

I'm not just talking about the "oldschool" style that many artists are using again in their tracks (eg. Sound Rush), or the return of some artists (Headhunterz, DBSTF), but on average the releases and upcoming ones are much better in quality, energy, drive and emotion than in the last few years. Also the split between euphoric/raw is kind of starting to close up again for more and more artists, hoping this direction will stay.

I don't think I'm alone when I say that 2017 is the best year for hardstyle this far! It's only been 7 months but whatever :listen:

2006. By fucking miles. Just go listen to Technoboy @ Sensation Black, The Prophet @ Sensation Black, Alpha Twins @ Qlimax, Donkey Rollers @ Qlimax. That year will always stay the best year of this genre for me.

Same for me. The years before 2011 were the best in terms of music imo but this year is really awesome and a lot of cool stuff is being played lately. And yeah you're right, the raw euphoric split is closing (at least a bit).

2004-2006 stays the best period for me :)
I'm not interested in everything that's going released lately but there's few interesting and enjoyable stuff too in 2017.
Worst years were definately 2010 to 2014, lost my interest there blergh

2006/2007 when nobody tried to recreate a certain sound, and producers used more ingenuity

2007 but every year has ups and downs. I normally look ahead with hardstyle and enjoy it as much as I can. The trouble with nostalgia is you tend to forget the shit and remember the good stuff. I have read a lot of posts on the forum like "2017 is great cos the euphoric and Raw divide closing" but these sort of statements were made last year and even the of 2015. I listen to alot of early Hardstyle and 2007/08 era and sure it's filled with superb tracks but modern hardstyle has giving alot of outstanding material too. I think this year has been particularly good Artist Album wise. B Front, Audiofreq and Phuture Noize putting out landmark pieces of hardstyle. This year has also brought alot of older heroes back to the genre yet we also got some very forward thinking producers such as Clockartz and Sub Zero Project. Everyone has their preference but if you look hard enough with an open mind, every year has been a great year for hardstyle

I got into Hardstyle in late 2008 and for me the era between 2006-2009 was magical.

In general I'm happy with the direction Hardstyle is going at the moment, I really enjoy the genre again. I lost my interest between 2012-2015, those were bad years, at least for me.

For me it's a very tight competition between 2009/2010 and 2017 (year isn't over yet so difficult to say). I also liked 2012 a lot, it's hard to rank the years...

2008, 2009 & 2010 nostalgic/atmosphere wise.

Technically, and how epic and full the tracks sound: 2017. Deffo a good year imo :)

Got into Hardstyle somewhere in 2002 but personally 2006 was the best for me, pretty much went to every party (Defqon on a HOT beach, 16h of Q-base madness, last 'dark themed' qlimax, etc etc) and all of them were epic. It was basically also the year that got me working in the Hardstyle scene with many memorable moments since :)

2006 till 2010 were the best years imo, after that hardstyle got split up by raw/euphoric and commercial (Year of Summer still got played on dutch radio..)
Imo 2014 till 2016 were not that great years where Raw took the upperhand and euphoric losing grounds quite fast (resulting in canceling parties, and 20/80% euphoric/raw on mainstages).

But I notice a change this year as Euphoric is taking back it grounds and pioneers returning with great tracks (Headhunterz, D-Block & S-te-Fan - Spirit Of Hardstyle Label).
So maybe at the end of this year i can add 2017 to the 'best year of hardstyle' :)
